In school you need to find a topic before you begin to speak. At a bar finding the topic is half the conversation! It is a treasure hunt in which we discover interesting things about each other.

My favorite bar in Golden Gai is Troll Bar. At Troll we often start by saying who you look like. The conversation usually starts as ‘Are you …..?’ People think I look like Christopher Reeves from the old Superman movies, so they will ask me ‘Are you Superman?’

I like to ask a little bit more complicated questions. I know the vocabulary can be difficult, but the answers are really interesting and fun. Because the answers are interesting and fun, we always find a way to tell each other what we think. All it takes is a little English, a little Japanese, some body language, 擬態語　and 擬音語. And a lot of fun!
